Nottinghamshire and Leander’s Sue Arrowsmith has been named as the winner of the 2016 Cherriman Award.
Sue was the unanimous choice of the newly formed Home Countries Masters Swimming Management Group from the eight nominations received.
The Nottingham Leader swimmer, known as ‘The Prof’, put in tireless work over the last two years to raise the concerns of the Masters community about the European Championships.
She helped to establish a workable solution with British Swimming, in terms of funding and the re-establishment of a representative group to deal with Masters development.
Away from the pool, Sue is Achilles Professor of Public Procurement Law and Policy at Nottingham University and takes time out from, amongst other things, addressing the European Parliament on the implications of Brexit to lobby on our behalf.
She is also the Nottingham County Masters Rep and plays an active role, in conjunction with the coach, of organising the Nottingham Leander team.
Home Countries Mastser Swimming Management Group chair Verity Dobbie said: “Well done Sue. We are all grateful for your efforts.
“It’s always an interesting session reading the nominations for the award and it’s truly impressive the amount of great work and volunteering that people do for our sport.
“There were eight nominations this year which I think might be a record and whilst they were all great, the eventual winner was head and shoulders above the rest when considering the criteria for this award.”
About the Cherriman Award
The Vivienne and Leonard Cherriman Award is an annual award presented each year to the individual or group who have done the most to foster or promote the cause of Masters swimming in Great Britain.
The award was introduced in 1993 following a donation by the Cherriman family in memory of their parents, Vivienne and Leonard, who were early stalwarts of the Masters movement in this country, with Vivienne notably producing the very first Masters newsletter.
