1993 Jackie Thompson

The 1993 recipient of the Notts County Council Swimmer of the Year Trophy is Jackie Thompson. Jackie is a fine example to all our younger swimmers. She combines studying for her PhD with her competitive swimming career. Through good organisation, dedication and determination she manages to be equally successful both academically and in her competitive swimming. Jackie contributes to the squad, being the swimmers representative on the Nova Centurion committee and always sets a fine example in training and competition.

Competitively, this has been Jackie's best year. She has had some notably firsts. At the Gloucester Grand Prix competition in November Jackie swam superbly recording personal best time after personal best time and taking her first Grand Prix titles when she won both the 100 and 200 meter butterfly.

Jackie continued to be a finalist in almost all the big swimming meets during the season and continued to progress steadily. However, she saved her best performance for the most important competition of the year, the National Swimming Championships and European Trials held in June. Once again Jackie swam best times at this event and clinched selection for the British team for the World Student Games with a superb swim in the 100 meters breaststroke . At 24 years of age she achieved her first international representation. I am sure everybody will agree Jackie Thompson is a worthy recipient of this year's Swimmer of the Year Trophy.

Update: Jackie married Dr. John Harris in 1996 and they have two sons, Ben, who was born in December 1998, and Josh, who was born in June 2001. Jackie retired from Nova in 1997 after becoming a multiple World Masters Champion. Jackie gained her PhD at Nottingham University in 1996.
