Former International swimmer, Selena Burgess has been appointed as the new head coach at Bramcote Swimming club. Selena replaces Tom Wilkinson who is leaving to take up a position with the Nottingham county squad, Nova Centurion. Selena is delighted to be joining Bramcote: "I took part in the 1996 Olympic Trials, and after competing at the European Junior Championships in 1997, I joined Nova Centurion in 1998 and made the British Senior Team for the first time in 1999. "Tom Wilkinson has made a huge contribution to building such a thriving swimming team at Bramcote and his shoes will be difficult to fill. "My particular emphasis will be to develop the technique of our talented swimmers. Technique is the most important factor in developing young swimmers. If technique is right then speed will naturally come. This is the philosophy I plan to bring to my new coaching role at Bramcote." Bramcote has undertaken a significant number of developments over the last two years: a summer swim camp was organised in Germany in 2009 for 40 swimmers; the Bramcote Open Meet is now in its third year and several new Invitational events have seen increasing levels of support. The annual Bramcote Club Championships is now a licensed meet running on BAGCATS principles.
Throughout last year Bramcote swimmers have secured places in GB national squads, English Schools, and County squads. The Club received the Swim 21 accreditation and the senior team has just been promoted to the Arena National League division 1 as division 2 Champions. Andy Thornton, Chair of Bramcote Swimming Club, said: "We are sad to see Tom leave us as he has helped to create a vibrant squad. However, this is natural progression for Tom and we aim to develop our coaches as well as our swimmers. I am very pleased to announce that Selena has now joined us to help drive the club even further forwards in its development." Selena achieved a first class honours degree in Sport Science at Nottingham Trent University in 2004. She is a teacher of Science and Psychology at Redhill Secondary School in Arnold. She is a Level 2 Swimming Coach and is currently progressing though her Level 3 coaching qualification. She she still swims regularly, completed her first triathlon in September 2009 and will be doing the 3 peaks challenge in April 2010 for a school charity.

When Mike initially joined Calverton the club was in division 3 of the Speedo league and low down in the Nottingham league galas. This subsequently changed with Mike's guidance and the club gained promotion every other year and reached their first final of the West Midlands division 1 by 2002, which was also the club's first year in the top division.
Over the years Mike has been a dedicated coach not only to the club but the sport as well. During his time at Calverton and CABSC he travelled about 90 miles to training and back each session approximately around 25000 miles a year, enough to travel around the world 3 times!

Updated link to UK Sport anti-doping video. 29th November Arnold Swimming Club Championships 2009 Arnold Swimming Club have recently completed their Club Championships for 2009 which were spread over 3 Galas. There was considerable success from the swimmers resulting in 448 Personal Best Times and 24 Club Records. Swimmers ages in the Club Championships ranged from 4 to 40+, although the 40+ swimmers only made an appearance in the "Coaches Challenge" which provided an opportunity for 72 competitive swimmers, in 12 teams to compete in 2 heats to face the honour of competing against the Coaches Team! Alas, with the hindrance of rather large, baggy T shirts which had to be exchanged after each stage of the relay the Coaches won! Arnold SC would like to thank all the volunteers who helped to make the Club Championships the best ever. Good luck to all the swimmers who will be hoping for similar success in the 2010 County Championships which start early next year.

Head coach Dave Palmer says "This squad of swimmers are joy to work with, the harder the training the more they want it and as you can see the hard work in training has paid dividends in competition. The amount of PB's that have been achieved over the last six months is astounding. Congratulations to the swimmers and many thanks for the support staff."
