About Nova |
Nova Centurion Swimming Club is the competitive outlet of the Nottinghamshire County Council Swim Squad. The County Swim Squad was one of the first squads to operate in the country and formed a model for many similar type of squads across Britain. There are three main sites, Nottingham, Mansfield and Bassetlaw, all with a full-time qualified coach, so that no swimmer has to travel too far to get top quality training. With the backing of the County Council the squad has become one of the most successful in the country, having won the Great Britain Club Team Championships and been the Top Team at both the National Senior and Age Group Championships on numerous occasions. Nova is a Swim21 accredited club. Management
The Squad is the financial responsibility of the Notts. County Council Leisure Services Committee and the Bassetlaw and Mansfield squads are financed by their respective District Councils, with grant aid from the Notts County Council. All three head coaches are full-time employees.
The management of the Squad is in the hands of a Management Committee, which comprises one representative of the Leisure Services Department, five invited from the Notts. ASA., the Chief Coach and the Administrator. There are also Management Committees for the Bassetlaw and Mansfield Squads comprising club representatives, parents, the local authority and the respective coach.

The initial terms of reference were based on the 'Martin' Report of 1969 and the Coventry Scheme 1972-73, and were as follows:-
1. To give an appropriate number of selected swimmers opportunity to take part in regular, well-organised coaching sessions in a good coaching environment at suitable times.
2. These swimmers to be able to train for between 12-20 hours per week, depending on their ability.
3. The whole scheme to be under the direction of a full-time, suitably qualified professional coach.
4. The swimmers to pay a realistic fee.
The aim would be by these means to raise the standard of competitive swimming in Nottingham and the county, and thereby increase the prestige of all concerned in the swimming world.
| Membership
Membership to the Nottingham Squad may be by invitation from the Nottinghamshire County Council Leisure Services Department and the Notts ASA or by individual application, in which case swimmers will be asked to attend a trial evening.
Membership is open to swimmers who reside in Nottinghamshire, swimmers residing outside the County will only be accepted if they are a member of a club affiliated to Notts ASA and compete in the Notts ASA Championships. In addition they must be nationally ranked in the top 15 in their age group.
There will be an overall reorganisation of all swimmers each December for the new competitive year. In addition, after the County Age Group Competitions (i.e. May/June) the Squads will be reviewed by the Chief Coach and Management Committee.
At these times (May and December) new applicants or recipients of invitations issued in conjunction with Notts ASA may attend a trial evening for consideration for acceptance onto the Squad. Membership may be reviewed at any time on the advice of the Chief Coach and/or Management Committee.
